The far-right French presidential candidate, tried for incitement to hatred, will know his sentence at the beginning of next week.

Eric Zemmour was on trial for remarks made in September 2020 on CNews.

Judged in his absence in November for incitement to hatred after his comments on unaccompanied minor migrants, Eric Zemmour will be fixed on Monday on his fate. The far-right polemicist, against whom a fine has been requested, will not be present at the Paris Criminal Court for the reading of the judgment, said his lawyer, Olivier Pardo.

Already prosecuted on numerous occasions for racial insult, incitement to hatred or contestation of crimes against humanity, the presidential candidate was this time summoned to appear by the prosecution for remarks on unaccompanied minor migrants, held on September 29 2020 in the show “Face à l’info” on the CNews channel.

“A permanent invasion”

“They have no business here, they are thieves, they are murderers, they are rapists, that’s all they are, they must be sent back and they must not even come,” had- he claimed on this show. “It’s a permanent invasion”, “it’s a problem of immigration policy”, he then vociferated during a debate devoted to unaccompanied minors, after an attack in front of the former locals of “Charlie Hebdo “.

During the hearing, shunned by the polemicist on November 17, the prosecution judged that his “contemptuous, outrageous remarks” showed “a violent rejection” and a “hate” of the immigrant population. “The limits of freedom of expression have been crossed,” said the representative of the public prosecutor’s office, requesting a fine of 10,000 euros from Eric Zemmour.

Fifteen lawsuits

The penalty requested, 100 day-fines at 100 euros, can turn into imprisonment in the event of non-payment. Thirty associations have joined as civil parties, including SOS Racisme, the League for Human Rights (LDH) and the Licra.

The controversial outings of Eric Zemmour, 63, forced to leave CNews in mid-September because of his presidential ambitions, have earned him around fifteen lawsuits over the past ten years. Several times released, he was sentenced twice for incitement to hatred.
