Nuku’alofa – Volcanic activity in the South Pacific island nation of Tonga has triggered a tsunami in the region, according to the US Tsunami Warning Center. Tidal waves with a height of around 60 centimeters were measured, the authority said on Saturday. The New Zealand news platform “Stuff NZ” cited several eyewitness reports. They speak of worried people who are looking for protection on the island – but there are no reports of injuries. The sky over the island is now covered with a dark layer, the light has largely gone out, although it is only 6 p.m. in the evening. Even in Fiji, 800 kilometers away, the explosion sounds of the volcano could still be heard, according to reports quoted by “Stuff NZ”.
