A half-kilo meteorite crashed last Monday in the Verbier region of Valais. The size of a tangerine, it has still not been found.

“On November 29, a meteorite of about 500 grams crashed in Valais”, said on Monday Michaël Cottier, scientific mediator at François-Xavier Bagnoud Observatory, based in Saint-Luc in the Val d’Anniviers, at the microphone of “Rhône FM”. The main part of the meteor must have ended on the side of the Corbassière glacier in the Val de Bagnes, but smaller debris may have been deflected by the wind around the main impact, he adds.

Not yet found

As the area is not easy to access and dangerous in winter, the meteorite has not yet been found. Michaël Cottier calls for not “to take unnecessary risks to go and get her”. In spring, however, he invites those interested to be attentive to rocks and pebbles during their walks in the region.

“We will make available a page on our website that will summarize what a meteor found on the ground looks like and the elements to be careful of. Do not hesitate to contact us so that we can tell you if this is the right track or not, ”he added to regional radio.

“You shouldn’t expect to become a billionaire.”

Some meteorites “very, very rare may be of value, as is the case with Martian meteorites”. In the case of the Val de Bagnes, “you shouldn’t expect to become a billionaire, the interest of the discovery is rather scientific”, adds Michaël Cottier. The latter also invites to contact the Museum of Earth Sciences of Martigny or the François-Xavier Bagnoud Observatory of Saint-Luc so that the pebble is brought to a museum and analyzed.
